The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
