Trumpism's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your jacket you should give him your sweater also.
The evident and direct truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a form of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity something of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to that which renders it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it means both meekness and faith, a blend that serious American Christians ought to accept.
